Shea Butter Baby!!

The Beginning

I discovered shea butter when I was about 12 years old. Around the time I discovered it I also discovered more about myself. I got my first relaxer when I was 2 years old. My mom said my hair was so thick she didn't know how to maintain it. I don't blame her. In 1998 their wasnt much information out about how to care for a kinky, coily hair.

By the time I reached middle school i began to see girls who looked like me but their hair was very curly. I remeber asking them how they got their hair like that. They said water. I thought they were lying. When I put water in my hair it would lie flat on my head like a limp noodle. I was frustrated I started doing my own research to find out if an african-american girl could really have curly hair.

I was shocked by what I found. I saw how damaging the relaxer was to my hair and asked my mom if i could stop getting them. I went through the transitining phase for abut 7 months before i found the strength to the big chop. One day I woke up and just cut all the relaxed ends off.

That day I learned my natural coilly, kinky hair had a mind of it's own. I got box brais the very next day.

The Journey

Two Months Later the braids had to come down and I had to face the decision I made. My mom had aslo did the big shop so she was experimenting with different products. One day she brought home some organic african shea butter and I hated it at first! It was thick and smelled weird. I used it for a week straight (even though I had reservations). My hair had never felt so moisturized. Up until that point my hair was extremely dry! The only problem I had is that it was so thick I couldn't comb or brush my hair when i used it.

While using it my scalp was never itchy and my hair grew so much. That was 12 years ago. Now I have 2 beautiful daughers with thick, curly hair. Through the years I mixed shea butter with so many things and it never quite worked the way I wanted it. It wasn't until 2022 when i finally found the right formula. The final product is called "Hydrating Hair Butter". It contains 100% African Shea Butter, Soybean oil, Sweet Almond Oil, and Peppermint Oil. It works on my low porosoity 4c hair and my daughters 4b/4c hair. After washing our hair I massage the Hydrating Hair Butter in detangling it easily. I place our hair in plaits, braids or twist to seal the moisture in.

The Routine

I usually start our hair care routine on friday evening with taking down an old style and detangling. Saturday morning we wash. Immediately after I apply our Hydrating hair butter and plait. I like to leave the braids or plaits in for about 2 days to allow my hair time to dry completely and "eat" the butter. We take the plaits out Monday morning and Style.

Hydrating Hair Butter:

The Hydrating Hair Butter promotes healthy hair, hair growth, reduced dry scalp, reduced breakage and reduces shedding. It also contains proteins and carrier proteins that helps it lock in the moisture.
